Mendale Moicher Sfurim: Schloimale
Aus dem Jiddischen von Salomo A. Birnbaum
Berlin: Jüdischer Verlag, 1924
– not found in Schönberg’s library
Dearest Friend, My most sincere thanks to you and Johanna for your kind wishes and especially for the fine book [Martin Buber: Der große Magid und seine Nachfolger]. You gave me great pleasure with this gift. It is as if you had sensed that it would be of great importance to me at this precise time. Isn’t it remarkable how everything fits into place? I received another book of this nature from Schönberg. Perhaps it is new to you as well: it is the first volume of the collected works by the Jewish poet Mendale Moicher Sfurim, with the title “Schloimale”. Jüdischer Verlag, Berlin. A narrative. Quite magnificent, really! Have you heard of this poet? I am not yet entirely sure when he lived. In any case, he is a Russian Jew and reminds me a little of Dostoevsky.
